Last year a survey of online learning foundthat more than one in four students are taking classes online.
That’s almost 6 million students.
Here to talk about the secrets to stayingmotivated and on track when your class has no classroom is Provost Dr.
David Harpoolfrom Northcentral University.
Give me some advice for prospective students.
What do they need to know?
Alright here’s a statistic that I want toshare with you: according to the Institute for Women’s policy research, more than twenty-fivepercent of online students are raising children.
That’s a lot.
So I am assuming it must be very difficultto – online, children, making money.
It’s a lot to balance.
We’re seeing seventy-five percent of our studentshave a partner and multiple kids at home.
Sixty-five percent of our students are women, so it’s telling you that there’s a real access now to higher education.
But you have to have family support.
Somebody’s got to take care of the childrenand we hear stories from every neighbor, pastor, mom, dad, brother, sister, boyfriend, girlfriend- But it seems like everybody finds somebody who’s committed to their degree.
The first one you suggest is find a mentor.
We have a system in which you’re one-on-oneand in online learning, because you’re on your own, you have to have one-on-one.
There’s no group work, so it’s you and a facultymember and it may be as many as 12 faculty members over your entire degree.
Secondly, you absolutely have to have a placeto study.
You’ve got too.
They put “do not bother me.
We’ll hear those stories.
And that’s when the house is quiet.
We’re gonna talk to her via Skype.
She’s 55 years old and she just got her PhDin education.
Good for her! Let’s see what she has to say.
My family at Northcentral.
My family would just jump in and take careof all the creature comfort issues of the day and Northcentral develops a team of experts.
A team to strategically move me through thatdissertation.
She’s a great example to me.
Always wanted a doctorate, and man the studentsin her classroom are gonna really benefit from the fact she’s willing to do this.
That’s a good tip
Some people actually study, for example, whentheir kids that are at a daycare.
Sometimes they do it when they’re at a playdate.
Sometimes they do it during baseball games.
When their kids are at sport events.
They build around when their kids are busyand lots of times the spouse or the significant other just takes the kids during that time.
We’re gonna hear from another recent graduateher name is Regina Weatherford.
She just received her Doctorate last yearin Psychology.
Let’s see what she has to say.
Reading articles, taking notes, jot down myown thoughts.
But I made sure I accomplish one thing a day.
I love it.
And again, someone who always wanted an advanceddegree in psychology could not have done it on a traditional campus, found an online optionbecause we don’t require residency.
There’s no flying anywhere, having to be someplace.
And we’re asynchronous, which is kind of astrange word, but what it basically means is: anytime, anyplace, 24 hours, as long asyou have internet connectivity.
Now let’s talk about implementing those whowant to do it, and taking online classes with NCU, how do we do it?
NCU offers that flexible environment.
For example, we start every week instead ofwaiting a semester.
We also have one-on-one, so you’ve scheduled individuallywith your faculty member when it meets your schedule.
And most importantly, we have the technologythat makes this easy to communicate back and forth with your faculty member which is akey when you’re in a graduate degree.
They’re all over the all 50 states.
They’re in multiple countries.
We have stories of people finishing theirdoctorate degree, for example, in the middle of major disasters – but they find internetconnectivity and they’re so committed to finishing it, that they complete the doctorate.
This is high-quality interactive internet, and it’s the quality of experience.
Employers tell us recent studies indicateis as good if not better than it you then regular classroom.
And hear this, you’re learning all of theseskills while you’re taking the class that’s how modern corporations and other institutionscommunicate with one another.
Every study says that some employers may evenprefer it because it shows self-discipline and it shows comfortableness with technology.
